Making the leap from theory to practice

The Games Global Graduate Programme stands as a beacon of opportunity, inviting recent graduates to embark on a transformative journey in Cape Town and Durban. With a keen focus on hands-on learning, this dynamic initiative offers a robust 12-month training experience designed to equip graduates with the essential skills and insights required to thrive in the fast-evolving landscape of the gaming industry.

Beyond merely initiating careers, this forward-thinking programme is dedicated to empowering graduates with enduring tools and experiences, nurturing their professional growth for the long haul.

Pieter Skhosana transitioned from a participant in the Games Global Graduate Programme to assuming the full-time role of Developer L1 at our Games Global Portfolio studio in Durban. We sat down with Pieter to uncover the intricacies of his journey in the programme and its impact on his career success story so far…

Q. What did you study and what did you enjoy?

A. I studied a Diploma: IT and Advanced Diploma: Information Resource Management at the University of South Africa (UNISA). The curriculum exposed me to various aspects of ICT, which I found enriching and enjoyable. Researching software development and building applications was a fulfilling experience for me. There is something really satisfying about turning abstract ideas or problem statements into tangible, working software solutions.

Q. What value did the graduate program add to your career/personal journey?

A. For me, the graduate programme bridged the gap between the theory I learned in my studies and real work experience. It equipped me with industry knowledge and essential skills I needed for the real world of software development, particularly in the iGaming space. Making the leap from theory to practice boosted my abilities and accelerated my journey from novice to a more experienced developer.

Q. What are you enjoying your new role?

A. I am really enjoying the new challenges that come with my role, especially diving into more advanced tasks. It has been exciting to explore different software development tech stacks—it has not only kept things interesting but has also helped me become more adaptable and skilled at switching contexts smoothly. This has definitely been a game-changer when it comes to my ability to manage change and deliver results more efficiently.
